Fabric bandages use a woven backing. They flex with the skin, which is why the line's knuckle and large-strip formats are fabric-only — those are the shapes that go over joints and over areas that move.

Sheer plastic bandages use a thin plastic film backing. They are lighter, water-resistant, and lower-profile.

Two things in that table are worth stopping on.

The material premium flips at 1 inch

At 3/4" × 3" — the workhorse size, the one that empties fastest in any station — sheer plastic is the cheaper material by a wide margin. $57.00 versus $80.00 for identical 2,400-count cases. That is $23.00 per case, or 28.7% off the fabric price, for the same quantity of the same-size sterile bandage.

At 1" × 3", the relationship inverts. Fabric runs $77.00 per 2,400-count case; sheer plastic runs $90.00. Fabric is 14.4% cheaper here.

There is no material-level rule to apply. "We buy sheer because it's cheaper" is true at 3/4" and false at 1". A buyer who standardizes on one backing across the whole line pays more than a buyer who prices each size on its own.

The 2" × 4.5" fabric strip is a different category of spend

SHL-MPR63103 is the only size in the line packed 24/50 rather than 24/100, so a case holds 1,200 bandages instead of 2,400. At $175.00, that works out to 14.58¢ each — more than six times the cost of the 3/4" sheer strip.

That is not a markup problem; it's a size problem. It is a much larger bandage with correspondingly more material. But it means the large fabric strip should be stocked deliberately, in its own quantity, for the specific coverage it's needed for — not thrown onto the same reorder line as the small strips. A station that dispenses large strips for small wounds because that's the box that's open is burning about 12¢ per application.

How to read the sheer spot SKU

SHL-MPR63021 is the only 48/100 case in the line — 4,800 bandages, double the count of everything else. At $145.00 the case price looks like the second-highest on the sheet, which makes it look expensive on a purchase order. Per bandage it's 3.02¢, cheaper than three of the four fabric options.

This is the single most common way a case-priced catalog misleads a buyer: the invoice line shows the case, the budget variance shows the case, and the case that holds twice as much looks twice as expensive. Whenever you compare two SKUs from this line, divide by the case quantity first.

Building a station mix from the real numbers

Rather than standardizing on a material, standardize on a per-size decision:

  • 3/4" × 3" (highest volume): sheer plastic SHL-MPR63011 at 2.38¢ is the cheapest bandage in the catalog. If your protocols don't require a fabric backing for this size, this is the default.

  • Knuckles and joints: fabric knuckle SHL-MPR63131 is the only option; there is no sheer equivalent. Price it against nothing and stock to actual usage.
  • Large coverage: fabric SHL-MPR63103 at 14.58¢, stocked in low quantity and kept separate from the small-strip supply.

An illustrative swap: a station replacing one fabric 3/4" case per quarter with the sheer equivalent saves $23.00 per case, or $92.00 across four cases a year, on the same 9,600 bandages. Modest on its own — but it's the same arithmetic error repeated across a catalog, and this is what it looks like when you correct it on one line.

When a bandage isn't the right line item

Two adjacent decisions come up constantly on the same reorder sheet.

If the wound needs more coverage than a 2" × 4.5" strip provides, the answer isn't a bigger bandage — it's a gauze sponge plus tape.
