Surgical tape is the line item nobody argues about until somebody prices a year of it. The paper vs cloth vs clear surgical tape decision looks trivial on a PAR sheet — three boxes that all say "1 inch by 10 yards" — but the three materials in our catalog run from 66¢ a roll to $2.78 a roll depending on which one and which width you order. Stock the wrong default across a 120-bed building and the tape line quietly triples. This is a procurement comparison, not a clinical guide. Which tape a given resident's skin tolerates, and how a dressing is secured, are calls for licensed care staff and your facility's wound care protocol. What the three tape materials actually are

All six variants share the same base geometry — 10 yards per roll, available in 1 inch and 2 inch widths, latex-free, non-sterile, sold as a disposable securement product. The material is the only real variable, and it's what drives both price and where the roll ends up.

Paper surgical tape is the lightweight, breathable option and the one most facilities carry as their general-purpose default. It tears cleanly by hand, which matters more than buyers expect on a cart where nobody wants to hunt for scissors mid-dressing-change. Variants: SHL-MPR62012 (1" × 10 yds) and SHL-MPR62013 (2" × 10 yds).

Cloth surgical tape is the heavier, woven-backing option built for securement that has to hold under movement or weight — tubing, larger dressings, anything that gets tugged. It's the most expensive of the three by a wide margin. Variants: SHL-MPR62102 (1" × 10 yds) and SHL-MPR62103 (2" × 10 yds).

Clear surgical tape is the transparent plastic option, useful where staff want to see what's under the tape without lifting it. In our catalog it's also, counterintuitively, the cheapest per roll. Variants: SHL-MPR62202 (1" × 10 yds) and SHL-MPR62203 (2" × 10 yds).

The manufacturer offers three materials precisely because skin tolerance and application vary; that selection is a clinical decision. The procurement decision is narrower — which of the three you buy in volume, and which you keep as a smaller secondary stock.

Case packs and the width trap

Here's the part that catches new purchasing leads. Both widths ship in a 12-box case, but the boxes hold different roll counts:

• 1" tape ships 12 / 12 / case — 12 boxes of 12 rolls = 144 rolls per case
• 2" tape ships 12 / 6 / case — 12 boxes of 6 rolls = 72 rolls per case

So a case of 2" tape contains half the rolls of a case of 1" tape. Two of the three materials are priced identically at both widths, which means the 2" case is exactly double the per-roll cost of the 1" case for no other reason than the pack math. If your standing order says "one case of tape," you are ordering wildly different quantities depending on which width somebody clicked.

Three things jump out of that table.

Cloth is roughly double paper, at either width. $200 a case versus $120 for the 1" — a 67% premium per case and the same per roll. If cloth is your building's default general-purpose tape, you're paying a securement premium on every routine dressing that never needed it.

Clear is the cheapest 1" roll in the catalog at 66¢. That's 20% under paper. Buyers who assume the transparent option is the premium one have it backwards here.

The 2" paper case is the cheapest case on the list at $80 — and one of the more expensive rolls. $80 buys 72 rolls, not 144. Judging cases by sticker price is how a tape line gets mispriced; per yard, 2" paper at $0.111 costs 33% more than 1" paper at $0.083, and you're buying width you may not need.

How much tape a facility actually burns

Tape consumption tracks dressing changes and device securement, not census, so the useful planning number is rolls per month against your wound-care and IV activity rather than a per-resident rate. A rough starting point for sizing a standing order:

These move with your building. Because a 144-roll case covers a quarter or more at most facility sizes, tape is a product where the temptation is to order once and forget. The mistake that follows is ordering one case of one material. Most buildings need a large default plus a small secondary — not 144 rolls of a single tape that's wrong for half the jobs.

Paper vs cloth vs clear surgical tape: which to stock where

There is no single correct tape. There's a default plus exceptions.

Make 1" paper (TA-PE, SHL-MPR62012) the workhorse. At 83¢ a roll in a 144-roll case, it's the right price point for the highest-volume, lowest-drama securement in the building, and 1" is enough width for the majority of routine dressing edges. This is the case your standing order should be built around.

Keep 1" cloth (SHL-MPR62102) as a smaller secondary. At $1.39 a roll it's the priciest per-roll 1" option, so you don't want it as your default — but you want some on hand for the securement jobs that need a heavier backing. One case a year covers most buildings.

Add 1" clear (SHL-MPR62202) if staff have asked to see the site through the tape. At 66¢ it's the cheapest roll on the list, so there's no cost penalty for stocking it; the only reason not to is SKU sprawl in the supply room.

Order 2" in either material only when somebody has told you they need the width. The pack math means a 2" case is half the rolls, and per yard you pay 33% more for paper and 100% more for cloth than the same material at 1". Buying 2" as a "might as well" is one of the more common ways a tape budget inflates.

And know where tape stops being the answer.
